Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared images of his visit to the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad, where he watched a cricket match with “good friend” Anthony Albanese of Australia. The two Prime Ministers were greeted with warm applause as they performed a gesture of honor at the stadium to celebrate the 75th anniversary of friendly relations between Australia and India.
“Cricket, common passion in India and Australia,” Prime Minister Modi wrote on Twitter, sharing an image of the two leaders enjoying the Fourth Test match between India and Australia.
The two leaders had the honor of sitting in a “chariot” made from a golf cart, ahead of the Fourth Test match. Although the huge stadium wasn’t even half-filled due to tight security, the two heads of state received the warmest welcome from those present at the venue.
Prime Minister Modi and Mr Albanese presented Test caps to their respective captains, Rohit Sharma and Steve Smith.
Rohit Sharma and the Australia captain then introduced Prime Minister Modi and Anthony Albanese to the rest of the team.
BCCI captioned the video, “Special welcome and special handshakes!”
The two Prime Ministers stood with the players as the national anthems of India and Australia were played.
BCCI President Roger Binny presented Prime Minister Albanese with his portrait while secretary Jay Shah presented one to Prime Minister Modi. Later, the two leaders inaugurated the newly designed Hall of Fame room, where cricket and nostalgia have permeated the essence of each other.
“On the ground, Australia and India are competing to be the best in the world. Off the field, we are working together to build a better world,” the Australian Prime Minister wrote on Twitter.
India is leading the Border-Gavaskar series with a score of 2-1. Winning the Final Test will ensure the team qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship, where they will face Australia in London from 7 June onwards.
