PM, in Gujarat, will visit the site of the bridge collapse tomorrow

The prime minister said the center is extending any help from the state.

Ahmedabad:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Gujarat, will visit Morbi tomorrow, where at least 141 people were killed after a British-era bridge collapsed last night.

About 500 people, including women and children, were on the suspension bridge when the cables supporting it broke, sending everyone into the river below. Many people perform Chhath puja on the 150-year-old bridge in Morbi.

Earlier today, the Prime Minister said the center is extending any state help.

“I’m in Ekta Nagar, but my mind is with the victims of Morbi. Rarely in my life have I been able to experience such pain. On the one hand it’s heartache and on the other, yes” The road to duty,” he said while addressing the people at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat’s Kevadia, where he paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birthday anniversary.

The bridge over the Machchhu River in Morbi was closed for seven months for repairs. It was reopened to the public on October 26, Gujarati New Year, without a civil authority fitness certificate.

Gujarat Interior Minister Harsh Sanghavi this morning said a criminal case has been registered and a five-member high-level committee is investigating the bridge collapse. “A case has been registered with felony murder that is not murder and willful conduct causing the death of anyone found responsible,” he said.

The state government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the family members of each person killed in the accident and Rs 50,000 for those injured. The Prime Minister also announced financial support of Rs 2 each for the families of the victims.
