Plan to activate Jacob deGrom on Tuesdays

Mets are planning to restore Jacob deGrom from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo report. Two-time winner Cy Young will make his season debut against the National team.

deGrom hasn’t been in a major game in just 13 months. He was on his way to one of the most dominant pitching seasons in history last year, achieving an absurd 1.08 ERA with a 45.1% hit rate across 15 starts. However, he had a few injury concerns along the way and landed in the IL coming out of the All-Star Break due to a forearm/elbow problem. That ultimately proved to be the end of the season, with Righty’s final outing of the year set to take place on July 7.

New York is expected to re-install deGrom on top of the rotation along with free dealer pickup during the season Max Scherzer to form the game’s scariest 1-2 punch. Just before Opening Day, deGrom hurt his shoulder during a throw. He was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his shoulder blades, a problem that cost him almost the first 4 months of the 2022 campaign.

deGrom has been building back into the action game for a while, and he started a minor league rehabilitation mission in early July. He started four times, topping four innings and 67 pitching. His most recent appearance at Triple-A Syracuse came on Wednesday, so he will be given a six-day break before joining the major league club. DiComo writes that he wouldn’t be surprised to be given a strict pitch limit for his first appearance, but the Mets predict he will gradually build towards the traditional starter workload in the throughout the second half.

The Mets’ rotation will be more or less at its maximum for the first time in a whole year. deGrom will enter a stellar year with Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, Taijuan Walker and Carlos Carrasco. Scherzer has been his usual standout, while Walker has quietly posted an ERA of 2.67 across 17 starts. Bassitt had a rough time between May and June, although the generally reliable coin has rebounded to 3.20 this month. Carrasco is a more qualified fifth pick, posting an ERA of 4.07 with better-than-average hit, dribble, and ground rate. David Peterson is a solid Friday boot. Mets still exist without permissions Tylor Megill due to shoulder injury. Manager Buck Showalter told reporters on Friday that the club are viewing Megill as a bullish option for the rest of this season when he returns, at least until the end of August.

The Mets are a virtual padlock to create post-season, and the organization certainly anticipates using up three or four members of that team in a single knockout round. The more immediate concern is keeping a three-game lead against the Braves champions in the NL East, with the format’s first-round goodbye after the new season making it possible to finish as the number two seed in each. The tournament has a special advantage. It looks like the National League championship will end with the Dodgers and the winner of the East.

As for deGrom, he will have two months (plus any post-season action) to re-establish himself as the sport’s best pitcher now that he’s fit. Despite his absence, the 34-year-old retains plans to opt out of the final guaranteed season of his contract later this year. It would be a no-brainer if he proves he’s still in top form over the last few months, especially with one of the top free agent starters impending. (Joe Musgrove) now not sure hit the market.
