MANILA, Philippines — Pia Ildefonso will skip her second year with Ateneo in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.
The 5-foot-9 middle blocker on Saturday took to Instagram to announce his decision not to participate in the tournament but did not disclose the reason, which appeared to be a personal matter.
“Definitely the hardest decision I have made. I am choosing to face, fight and grow through the battles of my life outside of my favorite sport,” Ildefonso wrote.
The daughter of basketball legend Danny Ildefonso, who attended high school at National University’s Nazareth School, played her rookie year with the Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 84 last June but she was rarely coached. Oliver Almadro used in their bronze medal match.
Ildefonso, 20, played in the Season 85 women’s beach volleyball tournament, placing seventh with a win.
She also played a key role in Ateneo’s pre-season in Shakey’s Super League and V-League.
Although not playing this season, Ildefonso expressed his full support to his teammates.
“God knows how much I love this crowd. Always grateful and forever grateful for this team, all the opportunities and blessings,” she said. “Will always support you. Can’t wait to see you all do your best this season!”
