In professional sports, we often hear players go public with the expectation of a new contract rather than just letting their performances on the field or field speak for themselves. But that’s not how Phoenix Suns center DeAndre Ayton is handling his contract situation with the Suns. All Ayton has done over the past two years has been to improve his play and elevate his game even more in the post-season.

For the second consecutive campaign, Ayton improved his numbers in several key statistical categories from the regular season to the postseason. During the 2020-21 season, Ayton averaged 14.4 ppg and rose to 15.8 ppg in the knockout stages. This season, he has hit 17.2 ppg, and so far in the knockout stages, Ayton is scoring 21.1 ppg. Ayton also dramatically improved his on-field goal percentage from 63% in the regular season to 68% in the Suns’ first seven playoffs.

So what is the problem? Why didn’t DeAndre renew the contract he earned? Only Suns owner Robert Sarver can answer that question, but he’s not quite as cheap as the team is concerned. It’s not like Sarver has refused to pay anyone who is about to sign a new contract. In fact, over the past year, more than one Phoenix Suns player has had his contract extended while Ayton was forced wait. With allegations Given the taciturnity and racism that pervades the organization, you’d think Sarver would want to stay on the good side of his fan base.

Players in the role of the Three Suns received large salaries right before the season started. Cam Payne, Mikal . Bridgeand Landry Shamet all new deals signed with Phoenix prior to the start of the season. And Ayton continued to wait. While there is an argument about the importance of Bridges to the success of this Suns team compared to Ayton, there is no way I would buy Payne or Shamet at the same level.

Ayton and Sarver were discovered together a week before the season begins at a meeting in an Arizona resort to discuss a new deal. Of course, nothing happened in that meeting, and Ayton went into the season without an extension. After meeting with Sarver, Ayton spoke to the Phoenix media and expressed how “disappointed” he was that an agreement had not been made.

These contract negotiations can be bittersweet topics for any fan base. The longer they pull out, the worse it gets. This summer, Ayton is a restricted free agent, meaning the Suns could fit in with any offer another team makes. In 2005, Joe Johnson asks that the Sun do not coincide an offer made by the Atlanta Hawks, and so was Iso Joe. Not quite the same situation, but like Ayton, Johnson doesn’t feel like he gets the respect he deserves from the team. So he started.

So while Ayton will get paid this summer, it won’t be max extension he could get if the two sides reached a long-term deal last fall. Or maybe another team sneaks in and makes offers for Ayton’s services that he doesn’t want to turn down. Many years later, Sarver has opened about Johnson’s contract situation in 2005 and regret letting him go. So I don’t think we’ll see the same thing with Ayton. But we also know that history often repeats itself. We’ll find out soon if Sarver will have to repeat that.
