Phillies releases Didi Gregorius, activates Jean Segura
On Thursday, Philadelphia Phillies cut ties with one midfielder while welcoming another back.
Before their game against the Washington Nationals, the Phillies released a shortstop Didi Gregoriusmaking way for the return of second defender Jean Segura from the injury list.
Gregorius, an 11-year major league veteran, has been with the Phillies since signing as a free agent ahead of the 2020 season.
The 32-year-old has struggled to win the title this season for the Phils, despite playing solid defensively at short distances. In 63 matches, Gregorius slashed .210 / .263/.304 with one home run and 19 RBI while posting 36 strikes with only 13 walks.
Gregorius finished his time in Philly, having aggregated 24 home runs and 113 RBIs while taking down .230/.287/.384 across 226 games.
Segura, a two-time All-Star, hasn’t competed since broke his right index finger returned May 31, required surgery.
The 32-year-old was playing well before his injury.
Segura Polish .275/.324/.407 with six home runs and 19 RBIs through 44 games. He also led the Phillies in stolen bases with eight men before going missing.
In the NL East Division race, the Phillies (56-48) finished third behind the Atlanta Braves (63-42) by 6.5 games and the New York Mets led the division (66-38) by 10 games.
Going into the game on Thursday, the Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals was forced for third NL wildcard position; The San Diego Padres (61-46) and the Atlanta Braves (63-42) hold the top two spots.
The closest threats to the Phillies and Cardinals are the San Francisco Giants (51-54), sitting 5.5 games back, and the Miami Marlins (48-57), who are 8.5 games behind.
