MANILA, Philippine National Grandmaster Darry Bernardo topped Group 4 and FIDE Master Sander Severino finished second in Group 1 during the opening ceremony of the FIDE Paralympic Games in Belgrade, Serbia on Sunday.

Bernardo’s gold effort and Severino’s silver medal sent Team Philippines to third place overall after beating three other nations—India, hosts Serbia and Uzbekistan—also collecting eight match points.

Poland was the champion scoring six wins in multiple matches and the international team of Physically Disabled Chess Players (IPCA) took the team silver medal with 10 match points.

Other members of the bronze medal winning Philippine team were National Masters James Infiesto, Henry Roger Lopez and Cheyzer Mendoza.
