Jordan Spieth admits that the disappointment of missing a chance at The Masters helped fuel his victory at RBC Heritage.
Spieth, who claimed his first major win at the 2015 Masters and has scored three more times in the top three at Augusta National, was unexpectedly knocked out of the year’s opening main tournament last week.
The former world No. 1 beat Harbor Town Golf Club to claim a 13th PGA Tour title, reversing a three-stroke deficit on the final day before beating teammate Patrick Cantlay in the Ryder Cup on the first extra play-off hole. first.
“I’ve never missed a chance at the Masters before and very rarely don’t have a chance to win at the weekend, so I hate it,” Spieth admitted. “It was the worst feeling as a golfer I can remember.
“It’s my favorite tournament in the world and I’d love to compete at that event. I hit it really, really well and honestly just felt like I didn’t deserve to miss that game. I did. I feel like I’ve hit right where I want to be and ended up somehow past six o’clock.
“It hasn’t been easy to play, but I feel like I made some unfortunate mistakes on some pretty committed and nice shots. I hit the ball really, really well all spring, better than it was. Last year, and I didn’t. I didn’t score. So I’m just, I’ve spent a lot of hours on the putting green this week, and honestly, if it helps incrementally, then like that’s enough.
“I still have a lot of work to do. I put in a lot of effort and that definitely takes away some of the time you spend in other parts of the game, including bookings. I think I can redirect it. different right now and get on with the stroke, that’s what I’ve been trying to do this week last week. It’s been disappointing.”
Spieth hit two of his five openings and added a 15-foot birdie on the eighth, before canceling close range shots on the ninth and 11 by picking shots on the 13th and 11th. 18 to aim for the clubhouse.
Cantlay missed a birdie on the 72nd hole to win the event outright, while Shane Lowry, Harold Varner III, Sepp Straka, Erik van Rooyen, Cam Davis and Cameron Young all took the lead for one day. Magnificent Sunday.
“You have a lot of events where you feel like you should have won and someone beat you or made a bet or something, and a few times you have an event where you feel like you played good but not good enough to win, and honestly I feel like this is that week,” Spieth added.
“I needed a lot of things to stay on track. I needed birdie on day 18 and then needed some help, got some help, dodged a barrage of oncoming bullets, and finished in play-offs one One on one, where I lie, in the bunker, which though not big, is definitely better than Patrick’s.
“Yes, it was a bit of a surprise. I definitely feel like I’m putting myself on the hole this week to win a golf tournament, and I just had a hard time at the start of the week adjusting to it. difference in speed from last week.
