NEW DELHI: The parliamentary panel considering proposed amendments to the law raising the legal marriage age from 18 to 21 for girls will hold broader consultations on the matter and is gathering feedback about public perception and differing views on the topic from different stakeholders.
It is known that in the standing committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sport there is a strong view in the parliamentary department that there is a need for broader consultation on the proposed amendments, including study the individual laws regarding the age of marriage and the diverse traditions related to marriage among tribal communities.
In this context, it is important that the committee that should have delivered its report by January 24 was granted a three-month extension by Rajya Sabha President Jagdeep Dhankar, according to a parliamentary news release. As the committee is now expected to review the provisions of the Child Marriage Prohibition (Amendment) Bill 2021 and submit its report by April 24, it is clear that the report will not be submitted to Congress. in the upcoming budget session that begins on January 31 and is scheduled to end on April 6.
After the matter was referred to the parliamentary panel, it was initially given three months until last March to submit its report. It was then extended to June 24, extended to July, and has since been extended three times three times – first to October, then January, and now to May 24. 4.
The committee is headed by BJP MP in Rajya Sabha Vivek Thakur, who took over the chair after the commission was re-constitutional in September, known to have held consultations with ministries of women and child development, ethnic minority issues, tribal and labor issues on the subject and met with representatives of Unicef and UN Women.
According to sources based in Mumbai Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the Institute of Rural Management at Anand in Gujarat were asked to study the topic from a grassroots perspective and provide input.
The bill is under scrutiny under the government’s proposed amendment to the Child Marriage Prohibition Act of 2006, “to strengthen the application of this law in relation to marriage; to bring women to the same level of marriage as men in terms of marriage age. marriage; ban child marriage; make consequential amendments to other laws relating to marriage and other related matters”.
