People smugglers keep trying to recruit this boat captain. He keeps refusing : NPR
Ricci Shryock for NPR
His years as a captain on the Atlantic Ocean shaped Pape Dieye’s calm and reassurance.
He is not afraid of waves that are as aggressive as mountains. He doesn’t need GPS. He can steer the boat in the dark without using anything but the moon and the stars. He can tell the depth of water simply by its color.
His experience has made him a highly sought-after captain in Senegal’s underground business of bringing migrants to Europe by boat.
Many people begged him, but he told NPR why he always refused.
