MANILA, Philippines-Barangay Ginebra averted disaster Sunday night, overtaking Blackwater, 85-82, to open the Philippine Cup PBA campaign at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
It took the big plays of Gin Kings from the now fit Japeth Aguilar and Best Player Scottie Thompson to be assembled to upgrade Bossing, who is shocking the TNT champions down.
“We knew we had a battle on the spot, and it ended up being harder than we thought,” head coach Tim Cone said in post-match press.
“It’s a team to count on. Coach Vanguardia thinks the team is playing really well. They will be difficult for anyone this time around,” he added.
Thompson was named the man of the match after scoring 14 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists.
Christian Standhardinger leads with 21 points. For his part, Aguilar pumped 15 more times.
Blackwater, meanwhile, was pulled 15 points by Rey Suerte. Joshua Torralba and Baser Amer won at 14 and 11 respectively as Bossing slid to 1-1.
Ginebra got back into action immediately. The Gin Kings play Rain or Shine this Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Blackwater will have a chance to get back on track on Saturday when they beat NorthPort 1-0.
