PBA: Nick Demusis, known for his defense, provides offensive spark for Rain or Shine
MANILA, Philippines—Despite playing nearly two PBA seasons, it was only on Sunday night that Rain or Shine’s Nick Demusis scored double digits.
The crafty keeper had 12 points in a breakthrough 122-117 win over Blackwater, helping to break the club’s four-game losing streak in the Governors Cup.
“You know, I think it’s just the trust that the coach (Yeng Guiao) has in all of us. He said, every day, every one of my players can hit the ball. I know you all can score. So just instill that confidence from the first to the last in the spin? I think that helps us a lot in this first win,” Demusis told reporters.
His 12 points are nothing to scoff at as they are key for the Painters, who were twice down double-digits in the game against Blackwater. Demusis is one of four locals who have excelled and complemented Greg Smith II’s debut.
Before Sunday’s win, the 31-year-old from Hawaii had a best record of nine points. He did it three times during his youth career, including his stint in the Phoenix franchise.
Demusis is happy to have finally overcome the score obstacle, but he doesn’t appreciate the achievement.
And for a good reason.
“You know, to be honest, I want to focus on my defence. As you know, ever since I joined the PBA, if I can do my job on defense, attacking — or whatever happens — is a plus,” he said. he said.
“Hopefully I can stay that way but I still want to be known for being a defensive priority,” he added. “Offense will come.”
