MANILA, Philippines—James Yap went back in time with a classic Sunday night performance in Rain or Shine’s 105-87 loss to Meralco in the opening game of the PBA Governors’ Cup.
Yap earned 14 points based on a stunning crowd-pleasing performance at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Last played on September 30, 2021, the Top-Rated Two-Time Player admitted that he was stressed throughout the competition.
“I feel like I’m a rookie. I feel the same way back in 2004. Worried. I don’t know if I can do it,” he said.
“I am just happy to be welcomed by the fans. I am very grateful to them, and of course coach Yeng (Guiao) for giving me the opportunity to continue playing basketball,” he added.
A member of the league’s 40 greatest players, the 19-year-old pro also dedicates his comeback to his constituents in the City of San Juan, where he also currently serves with as a council member.
Yap’s stellar performance was a sight to behold for all in attendance, including Guiao, who felt that the veteran’s performance was one of the few blessings in the match. fight.
“I guess if there’s a positive side to this loss, it’s the James game. He was able to come back, and at least in those six, seven minutes he was able to hit his stride.”
“I didn’t expect it,” Yap said of his performance. “I’m just trying to get ready for the moment I get called up.”
Yap’s last match before Sunday night was in Rain or Shine’s quarter-final against Magnolia at the 2021 Philippine Cup held in Bacolor, Pampanga.
“I am very happy that I can still perform well. The results may not have been good since we lost, but I’m sure we’ll bounce back,” said seasoned Yap, who has written an impressive resume featuring seven PBA crowns, including the rare Triple Crown scan.
The Painters are hoping to win against TNT this Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
