MANILA, Philippines—Magnolia coach Chito Victolero has been silent on reports that his team is set to bring in former Terrafirma import Antonio Hester after an alarming 0-3 start to the PBA Governors. ‘ Cup.

But Victor said later lost 100-98 to San Miguel Beermen on Sunday that Hotshots are now intent on replacing Erik McCree, whose numbers have dropped following his debut.

“This is when we need to think [about our import situation],” Victor said. “We will talk to the coaching staff and see what happens.

“Our next match is on Friday [against Phoenix]so we will try to evaluate him (McCree) within the next 24 hours, then we will decide if we will stay with him or if we will change the import.”

McCree had just 13 points and missed 14 of his 18 tries, a production that left Hotshots fans hungry.

Hester played for Terrafirma in the Governors Championship last season, averaging 28.3 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals in 11 games.

He currently plays for Zamboanga Valientes in the Asean Basketball League and has scored 23.6 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.4 assists.

The Hotshots are having their worst start since losing 0-2 in the 2019 Commissioners Cup, where they were hunted by some import changes despite eventually reaching the quarterfinals.

However, Victolero saw some upside even in the defeat as Magnolia saw its competitive form flash, even as McCree was struggling and Ian Sangalang was still out due to illness.

“All we need to do is stay positive,” he said. “There are eight more games to go and we don’t need to wallow in these tough losses.

“Hopefully we can play well. I think our defense is slowly coming back and hopefully we can do more in attack.”
