MANILA, Philippines — Barangay Ginebra recovered from a poor start in the PBA Commissioners Cup with a vengeful 99-91 win over longtime rival Meralco on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Import Justin Brownlee was one of six players with a double score of 34 as Gin Kings entered the victory column after a Lost 22 points to Rain or Shine Elasto Painters last Wednesday.
“It’s a little bit gorgeous [losing to Rain or Shine] and I think it provided us with a wake-up call,” said coach Tim Cone.
Stanley Pringle also contributed greatly to Ginebra with 16 points, Scottie Thompson scored twice, scored 15 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists and 3 steals.
Ginebra defeated Meralco 0-2 in the first game since the two teams met in the tough deciding match of their Philippine Cup quarter-final series, which the team subsequently won.
The Bolts are without Chris Newsome, who suffered a calf injury last Friday when they suffered a melee in a 101-95 takes overtime for NorthPort Batang Pier.
Johnny O’Bryant scored 31 points and 16 rebounds, but his effort was not enough to lift Meralco to victory.
Meralco had its worst start to a conference with imports since the 2014 Managers Cup.
