MANILA, Philippines—Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao feels that even good governance won’t be enough to get his team out of a winless start in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Thursday.
But Guiao, who was sent off for two technical errors in 112-98 defeat of Elasto Painters at the hands of the undefeated Converge FiberXers at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City, saying consistent calls would put them in a good position to be able to score a nasty goal.
“I’m not saying we can win. Even if we run well, we will still lose,” Guiao said with a mix of Filipino words after stepping out of the Rain or Shine dig with his coaching staff.
“But, with better operations, we could have been in a better position. I feel like we can’t get motivated because we’ll get frustrated with the calls. But [like I said]I don’t think we’ll still win if we run well.
Guiao received his first technical foul in the second half for using obscene language with 4:53 remaining in the second half before being pushed over a minute to advance in the third after Santi Santillan was called up for a foul when he’s vying for position with Converge importing Jamaal Franklin.
Referee Mau Orioste slapped the fiery teacher with a second technical punch for once again speaking unprintable words, leading to his early disqualification from the competition.
“When Santi tried to seal, [the Converge] Guiao said. “We are trying to regain momentum and you make the same decision again.
“But like I said, that’s not a reason for us to believe we can win the game. But our only chance of getting back into the game is if we can get the calls we deserve. I think we deserve to be run better.
The Elasto Painters are down 0-3, with Commission’s Cup champions Barangay Ginebra next on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Ignoring disappointments about the calls, Guiao said Rain or Shine still has a lot of work to do.
“The last three games, I think we are improving because we lost big to Meralco and we brought it to the final decision against TNT,” he said. “I think we are improving in this game, that we are on the right track. But it didn’t.”
