PBA: After 53-point effort in tuneup, Michael Qualls shut down by Meralco this time

MANILA, Philippines—Coach Norman Black is delighted that Meralco was able to watch Rain or Shine import Michael Qualls live before the two teams meet on Sunday for the start of the PBA Governors’ Cup.

Bolts held Qualls by just 14 points in their game win 105-87 during the opening of the season-ending conference, a few days after the Elasto Painters import broke out with 53 in their tuning game held last week at Meralco Gym in Ortigas.

“It could actually be a blessing in disguise,” Black said. “Because we had the opportunity to track him down and spy on him, and devise a defense against him. It worked pretty well tonight.”

There are no additional stats from that exhibit as only individual points are usually counted in such games.

But in the standings, Meralco forced Qualls to miss 19 of his 22 attempts, which contributed to the final result, which saw Bolts trailing in the second half.

That’s why Black felt there was no reason to be too worried.

“It’s show season anyway,” Black said. “We beat Ginebra last year in an exhibition season and they won the championship.

“So the show season doesn’t make much sense.”
