Paying up for Twitter’s blue tick? Here’s what else you get for your money | Science & Tech News

Twitter will charge users for the famous blue tick – the first major change since Elon Musk’s controversial takeover.

Update to its iOS app on Saturday indicates this feature is active among the few countries that have been experimenting with premium rates Twitter Blue service – originally launched last year.

However, the implementation of the blue tick is currently said to be on hold until after the US midterm elections on Tuesday.

The New York Times said employees raised concerns people could use it to impersonate political figures and publish false information.

Twitter Blue, now up to $7.99 per month in the US, is currently available in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand – but will be available in other places soon, including the UK.

So what are some other features you get besides the blue checkmark?

Shameful misspelling? Edit and undo tweets

A long-requested feature, users can edit tweets up to five times within the first 30 minutes of a tweet: for example, to correct spelling or clarify meaning.

The fact that the edited tweet is flagged and others can click through to see previous versions.

Twitter users Blue also have the ability to undo tweets, giving a brief “cooling” period before the post goes live – perhaps useful if you forgot to tag someone.

It provides a preview of the tweet and a countdown to how long the post can be retracted. The undo interval can be customized from the default 20 seconds.

Custom colors and own navigation

Bored with the classic Twitter light blue? Do you like the pink theme or the distressed black theme? Registered users can change the color of the app icons, as well as the overall color theme.

The navigation bar can also be customized to include the most used destinations by people such as notifications, lists, messages, top or discover articles.

Text size can also be changed.

Upload more long – and better videos quality

Paid users also get first access to new Labs features being tested, ahead of “regular” non-subscribers.

These now include the ability to post videos up to 10 minutes – instead of the usual two minutes and 20 seconds – and in full HD 1080p quality.

This will increase to 42 minutes in the coming days as “New Blue” features roll out, meaning people can embed longer clips in their tweets instead of linking to a service like YouTube.

NFT profile photo

Those who have dived into the world of NFT (non-fungible token) – probably one of Damien Hirst .’s spot paintings – can also use their virtual purchase as their profile picture by connecting their crypto wallet.

Top articles and priority ratings for subscribers

Users can use this section to see which articles are generating buzz and being shared by the people they follow.

Other features promised “coming soon” on Twitter Blue include fewer ads and priority ranking in search, mentions, and replies to “quality content” posted by subscribers.

Although, some have raised concerns that this could create a system where other posts become harder to find.

Twitter CEO Esther Crawford has said that despite the update to the iOS app, the new Twitter Blue isn’t fully out yet.

“New Blue is not out yet – our launch sprint continues but some people may see us updated as we are testing and driving changes in real time ” she posted.

And as the mass layoffs of Twitter employees continue to resonate – something Musk says it’s important to prevent the company from losing money – Dozens of workers are said to have now been asked to return.

Bloomberg reported on Sunday that some were fired by mistake, while others were let go before realizing their skills were still needed.
