Smoldering crisis

In COVID-19 pandemic, prolonged school closures and lack of access to quality learning have revealed and exacerbated a pre-existing learning crisis that has left millions of students unskilled in reading. and basic writing.

To draw attention to the education crisis and need to transform learning around the world, UNICEF created ‘Learning Crisis Class‘, a model classroom that represents the size of children who fail to learn important basic skills.

The installation will be on display at the visitor’s entrance to UN Headquarters in New York between September 16 and 26. The model will serve as a reminder to government officials, heads of state and daily visitors about the urgent need for major global investment in education.

Class division

One-third of the desk in the model classroom is made of wood and fully functional with an iconic UNICEF backpack placed on a school chair behind it.

This group represents an estimated one-third of 10-year-olds globally who can read and understand a simple written story.

The remaining two-thirds of school desks are barely visible and are made of clear materials indicating that 64% of children are estimated to be unable to read and understand a simple written story by the age of 10.

UNICEF says the invisible nature of these tables corresponds to the ongoing short-term crisis, but also denotes the extent to which civic contributions will be lost, if urgent action is not taken to give all students the tools to thrive..

Catch up

As leaders meet at the Transformational Education Summit, UNICEF is calling on governments to commit to reaching all children with quality education.

The agency continues to call for renewed effort and investment to re-enroll and keep all children in school, to increase access to supplemental and catch-up learning, to support teachers – and to provide give them the tools they need – and make sure schools provide a supportive environment where all children are ready to learn.

This plan, promoted by UNICEF under the acronym ‘RAPID’, represents the international community’s effort to take legal steps to promote better education and unlock the potential of millions of children. .
