Patrick Mahomes continues to play insane in September

Patrick Mahomes has a Super Bowl win and MVP, but the most astonishing achievement of his career may be his sustained dominance in September.

Mahomes worked quickly for the Cardinals on Sunday, completing 30 of 39 for 360 yards and five touchdowns in a performance that only added to his other-worldly career numbers in September.

In the game that began on September 14, Mahomes threw 4,604 yards, 46 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He completed more than 70% of his passes in more than half of his September starts.

Of those 14 starting points, Mahomes posted a passer-by rating higher than 115.0 in those 11 starting points. The league’s average passer rating was 90.8 last season.

That total would add up to one of the best individual seasons in NFL history across 17 games, let alone 14. Mahomes’ career passer rating for September was 123.4. For comparison, Peyton Manning’s pass count when he hit a record 55 touchdown passes in 2013 was 115.1.

Mahomes starts Feb. 12 in September, with both losses coming in 2021. Yesterday’s great start is reminiscent of how Mahomes began his tenure as a year starter. 2018, when he opened the season with 13 touchdowns and no interceptions in his three September starts.

Chargers and Colts next in Mahomes’ path of destruction.
