Paramount’s ‘Smile’ is smiling on its way to repeating its box office win (NASDAQ: PARA)

Horror hits Smile (NASDAQ:PARA) (NASDAQ:PARAA) managed impressive theater business to repeat the top spot of the weekend’s total box office charts, easily staving off a few premieres and setting up a macabre clash with a Halloween Legends next weekend.

Smile dropped only 22% to $17.6 million, its best retention of the year in its second week, bringing its cumulative domestic total to just $50 million and resulting in a worldwide total. world is $89.9 million to date.

That should be enough to overcome the lackluster opening pair of the weekend. Adaptation of children’s books Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (SONY) only grossed $11.5 million to come in second and the star-studded comedy/mystery Amsterdam (DIS) grossed a disappointing $6.5 million.

The top five have been rounded off by Queen (SONY), took in $5.3 million in its fourth weekend and Don’t worry, baby (WBD), with $3.5 million by the end of the third week.

Smile are earning some timely seasonal horror, though film exhibitors appear to have waited to arrive after just four days. Halloween is over (CMCSA) is expected to end a long drought with massive openings, while next week will bring DC hero drama Black Adam (WBD).
