David Tepper is saying all the right things – it’s just that he doesn’t do those things. The Carolina Newspaper the owner made waves this week when he insisted he was contributing to the break NFL’s “Network of Old Men” of wealthy white bosses who rarely hire Blacks and minorities into positions of power, especially head coaches. Tepper’s comments come after hiring Frank Reich – a white coach – to replace the team’s former interim coach. Steve Wilki — a Black coach took over Matt Rhuleanother white coach.

Rich white guys like to talk about themselves.

“Right now, we have perhaps the most diverse executive team in the NFL. We’re probably a white minority on our executive team right now. That’s where it started. That’s America,” Tepper proudly brags.

Tepper explains that the Panthers’ main office consists of his wife, who holds the position of chief administrative officer, along with three other women in senior roles, the chief administrative officer (Kristi Coleman), the senior vice president. (Kisha Smith, a Black woman), and general counsel (Tanya Taylor, also a Black woman.)

Whenever a white person like Tepper is quick to point out something like this, they never realize that your ability to count minorities in your circle is not a good thing.

“I’m not a racist. See, I have three Black friends!” — An old white man proverb.

“How do you break that old boys’ network? How do you break that process? You break the process by trying to get the best people possible in every role you can do,” he said. “Whether it’s the new [general counsel] we hired, who happened to be an African American woman. Whether it’s Frank Reich, a white man or not.

Tepper Almost Pulls A “Jerry Jones”

The core of the problem with Tepper is that he’s almost drawing “Jerry Jones” into us. Too many people get caught up in it Jones’ infamous photo from 1957 in Arkansas among a crowd of white students, “standing on the front lines of one of Little Rock’s darkest segregationist conflicts,” from The Washington Post Storynot its content – as it focuses on Jones’ lack of progress in diversity despite all the power he holds in the NFL.

Jerry Jones never hired a Black head coach. Tepper has never hired a Black head coach. See connection?

What’s worse is the man who claims he’s a variety fighter in the dingy streets of Avenue of Injustice, telling us from the start that Wilks never had a chance to fight to became the Panthers’ permanent head coach, even before he turned 6-6 after Rhule started season 1-4.

“He’s in a position to be considered for that position,” Tepper talks about Wilks in October. “I spoke to Steve, no promises were made, but if he’s doing an incredible job, then he has to be considered.”

“Great job.” Think about it for a second, when you realize that Tepper moved the goalposts for Wilks before the game started. Ironically, Reich was 3-5-1 last season when coaching the Indianapolis Colts before he was fired.

Does that sound “incredible” to you?

If Tepper wanted to really fight injustices in the NFL and show his co-workers the right way to do it, he hired Wilks and gave him enough time to see if he could turn the tide in Carolina. or not – the same way most of these owners did. what to do with the white coaches they like to hire. It’s not hard to do the right thing, as long as you’re not cowardly. The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a Black coach since 2007 and are yet to experience a single failed season under Mike Tomlin.

See, it’s not that difficult.

If the NFL’s “old boys” network” will never end, which will happen as more Black coaches are hired and white owners start lobbying their peers to change their minds when voting on the right to vote. ownership – because the owner has never elected a Black person to own the team.

It’s something David Tepper knows all about. When he was approved to buy the Carolina Panthers in 2018, it took place at the annual owners meeting. But, do you know what also happened that week at those meetings? The owners voted to implement an anti-kneel anthem policyit’s something straight out of “old boys” drama of the net. How do I know? Because I was there when it happened.
