Panthers HC Matt Rhule not ready to name start QB

The Carolina Panthers have yet to officially announce a quarterback starting with their season opener just over three weeks away.

Despite reports earlier this week that the Panthers would pick Baker Mayfield as the starter, head coach Matt Rhule Not ready to make his decision yet.

“Like I’ve said it all, when we know, we know, and we’ll announce it when it’s true,” Rhule told reporters after the loss to the New England Patriots on Friday night. 20-10.

On Wednesday, The Athletic reported that Mayfield won the QB from the start against Sam Darnold. Another report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport states that Mayfield has “an inside track,” and that it is “his job to lose.”

Neither Mayfield nor Darnold played in Friday’s preseason in favor of the Patriots.

“The people who haven’t played and those are all competing to be with everyone else, so we want to make sure they have a chance.” Rhule said. “We don’t want to take one or two people out there and play them behind the second line of attack.”

Darnold started 11 games for the Panthers last season after being acquired by the Panthers in an offseason deal with the New York Jets. 25 years old gone 4-7 in warm-up, 2,527 yards throw, 9 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Mayfield arrived in Carolina through a trade with the Browns in July that sent a conditional fifth-round pick to Cleveland. 27 years old has gone 6-8 in 14 appearances for the Browns last season, throwing 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
