The road to the GII Kentucky Derby in New York ended with the GII Wood Memorial S. on Saturday, featuring the winners of GII Remsen S., GIII Withers S. and GIII Gotham S. of Aqueduct, respectively.

Morelo (Classic Empire) gave Steve Asmussen a perfect treble after sharp, impressive wins in the game at Jimmy Winkfield S. February 6 and a one-mile turn in Gotham on March 5. He’s the morning 8-5 favorite for this first test about two turns.

“We are very happy. The horse is doing well, it’s super responsive and we think we have what it takes to get the job done,” said Dave Lyon of Blue Lion Thoroughbreds, who owns Morello in partnership with Craig Taylor and Diamond T Racing for know. “Distance is not a question mark for me. I think with the way he runs and his patience and class, it shows he can do it.”

Vote early (Gunman), drawn side-by-side in Morello in the third post, will be on the engine below Jose Ortiz. The Klaravich Stables athlete sped up to an impressive win in the race and the ride came in just second in the Withers live renewal match on Feb. 5. The Withers Field also included the winner. GII Rebel S. followed by Un Ojo (Laoban) (second) and GII Tampa Bay Derby Grantham (Declaration of War) (fourth).

“He went for the first time about two turns and he passed the test brilliantly,” said coach Chad Brown. “He has definitely gained experience and he seems to be training well. He likes to be placed first, so hopefully he’ll be there again.”

Traction rail Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo), a close winner against Zandon (Start up) in a near-running version of Remsen on Dec. 4, ran late to become a useful third as the favorite in his comeback in GIII Holy Bull S. at Gulfstream on 5. February. That day’s winner White Abarrio (Race Day) supported that effort with a win in GI last weekend Curlin Florida Derby. Mo Donegal was forced to miss GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. March 5 with heat.

Coach Todd Pletcher said: “I guess it’s a bit of a blessing to have come out of this situation compared to now. “He has been training well since then. In particular, I think his last breath for this is very good. ”

Pletcher continued, “The Wood fits our calendar and we pointed Mo Donegal there for a while to see when he won Remsen there. It makes sense to bring him back to the surface we know he likes. ”

Pletcher, also represented by the third Gotham Code Gold (Honor code) and a four-year-old girl Long-term (Curlin), made saddles for six of the most recent 11 Wood Memorial winners. A win would put Pletcher on an equal footing with the late Hall of Fame coach “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons, the all-time top coach at Wood with seven wins.
