Overwatch 2 accused of intentionally misleading players with latest battle pass

Overwatch 2 third season released last week with a new Antarctic themed map, a promised Valentine dating sim, and of course, another battle featuring a variety of in-game cosmetics. Blizzard has announced that for the first time this battle card will feature in-game currency, allowing players to purchase cosmetics of their choice, rather than just the card’s skins and souvenirs. But fans on reddit accused Blizzard of intentionally deceiving players with these rewards.

For all Overwatch newbies (or anyone skipping over the odd monetization), OW2 comes in two main currencies. There are Legacy Credits, which can be imported from the base game and used to purchase a limited number of in-game items. Then there are the Overwatch Premium Gold Coins that are purchased for real money and can be spent on exclusive packs and other similar things. Both currencies have similar shaped symbols, so they are often distinguished by color; Legacy Credits are white, Gold Coins are yellow, Tournament Tokens are red, etc.

Overwatch 2 has some Legacy Credits included in its most recent battle, though you’d be forgiven for missing that as they’re all masquerading in gold and looking more like premium coins . This leads to accusations that Blizzard is complicating the rewards to sell more battle tickets. To be fair, most currency payouts are available on the battle’s free track. Despite that, changing the currency color just on this occasion is odd and even makes OW’s already confusing monetization more confusing.

Overwatch players have been baffled by the sequel play for free make money since launch, criticizing the game’s flimsy battle card that locks new heroes after several tiers if you don’t pay. Scrolling through any Overwatch-related Twitter threads or Reddit posts – especially about in-game cosmetics – should clarify the fan issue. Fans and critics have pointed out that the sequel is nothing like the sequel to the series, but rather an overhaul of its monetization and progression.

Overall, Overwatch 2’s monetization can be very vague. You have one currency for skins, another currency for tournament themed skins, then another currency for other non-tournament themed skins. It’s hard to say if Season 3’s battle pass intentionally tampered with the rewards, but if the game’s monetization were more streamlined, wouldn’t this be an issue?
