Over 5.5 million spent on Mares to visit Lucky Vega at Goffs

The huge support of Lucky Vega (Ire) continued at Goff’s November Breeding Stock Sale as pony ties won 19 mares for the amount of €5,625,000, topped off by Aspiring’s €790,000 purchase, with the majority going to visit Group 1 -the minor winner next year.

Led by BBA Ireland’s Mick Donohoe, who has done most of his bidding online, the Lucky Vega Syndicate is continuing its efforts to recruit mares to visit the Irish National stud after sales similarly strong sales this year and last year.

Aspiring (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), half sister of Danedream (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}), was sold as a pony to Wootton Bassett (GB). She is also the sister of Venice Beach (Ire) and Broadway (Ire).

He said, “I think she’s a lovely physical person, she has a great cover, and she comes from a great family. She’s going to Lucky Vega. Mr. Zhang is doubling his donation this year by purchasing a select number of horses. He sent 30 mares to him last season and he will likely send the same number next year but will up the quality based on the strength of what he has seen from the foals. himself on the ground in Australia.

Lucky Vega costs €15,000 and on track he wears the green and white of Zhang Yuesheng, who has been a familiar face on this year’s sales track, and is in the Goffs again on Friday. The horses of the Chinese businessman in Ireland gathered at Jessica Harrington’s yard, where Bocca Baciata (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) was stationed when she scored a success in Group 2.

The mare deposited at Kiltinan Castle, the foal of Mehmas (Ire), was another horse participating in the Lucky Vega Syndicate for €530,000.

Donohoe said, “Obviously Mr. Zhang trains horses with Jessie [Harrington] and she trained her so she introduced the mare to him. Jessie is two years taller than her sister [Foniska (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})] that she trains, too. He actually bought Lucky Vega’s sister too. It has not been decided where she will go next year but she will go to school in Ireland.”

Donohoe continues to bid lower than the top batch of Ladies Church, who sold Dermot Farrington to an undisclosed customer for 970,000 euros, where he does most of his bidding online through his iPad on the balcony directly opposite the grandstand. That is until he seems to lose signal and, along with Mr. Zhang, is forced to pay the price the old-fashioned way.

Alas, it was not on Ladies Church but online bidding, he said: “Obviously Mr. Zhang is quite familiar with online auctions in Australia, online bidding there has had a few already. The year starts in Europe, so he feels comfortable bidding that way. That’s how they do it in Australia and that’s how it’s happening here because you can bid in a nice relaxed atmosphere.”

Donohoe added, “We can sit down and watch the horses in the parade and final check, and then go to lunch and bid comfortably. We value the horses and we bid according to what we think is their value, so it doesn’t really matter who bids against us. Sometimes, when you’re bidding in the ring, you can make an auction or two that you might later regret getting caught up in its theater. It’s all a little calmer doing it this way.”

Lucky Vega Syndicate is still going strong in the evening, spending 1.3 million euros on consecutive lots [1314 and 1315] Pleasant Dreams (Ire) and Awnings (Ire), both of which are Galileo’s.

Pleasant Dreams, earned €630,000, deposited by Grenane House Stud and sold as ponies to glitter banner (Australia) while Eaves earns 600,000 euros in ponies to Wootton Bassett (GB). All told, BBA Ireland contracted six Galileo mares to visit Lucky Vega for €3,195,000.

The total increased 19% to €16,525,500 while the average rose 16% to €82,216. The average price of €42,000 represents a 40% increase while the payout rate is 83%.

Women’s Church continues to train

Touted as one of the sale’s star attractions, the Ladies Church (GB) Group 2 award winning sprinter (GB)Churchill {Ire}) was knocked down for €970,000 to Dermot Farrington, who could not reveal new connections.

However, Farrington has confirmed that Ladies Church, coached by Johnny Murtagh to a three-time win, including a career highlight at the G2 Sapphire S. at Curragh in July, will race at just four age.

“I can’t say to whom she was bought, but she will definitely continue training next year,” Farrington said.

Ladies Church is consigned by Murtagh’s Fox Covert Stables, and a senior equestrian with a 110 rating, she is proud to be the daughter of a French listed class winner. Rio De La Plata).

Bought as a pony at Tattersalls in November 2019, she was later sold to Murtagh and her agent Peter Nolan the following year for 160,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale in 2020.

She is one of seven horse owners Mark Dobin, who has spread his small but selective streak between Murtagh, Gavin Cromwell, Joseph O’Brien and Ger Lyons, running in Ireland this season.

Maljoom Dam earns 450,000 €

BBA Ireland’s Adrian Nicoll is also busy, signing Nictate (Teophilo {Ire}), Maljoom’s dam (Ire) (Caravaggio), from Limekiln Stud for €450,000.

Maljoom has not run since falling to fourth place less than a length at St James’s Palace S. at Royal Ascot in June. Nictate was sold as a pony to Tally-Ho’s Starman (GB) and NicoLl was flanked by Paul Shanahan’s son Charles when the hammer fell.

Nicoll said, “She works for an Irish partner so she will stay here. She has a good stallion, she is a beautiful mare but I don’t know what stallion she will choose next. She’s the best and when you buy a black winner’s dam, you have to expect to pay such a number.”

Nagle pays €520,000 for Smart Shadwell Mare

David and Diane Nagle of Barronstown Stud spent €520,000 on Shadwell (GB)-listed Yasmeen (GB) (star sea {Ire}), was the dam of the winner of the Shaara List (GB) (Shamardal) and the pony of the Night Of Thunder (Ire)

Yasmeen comes from a deep Shadwell family, with her dam being Wissal, Bahhare’s sister, and Nagle revealed he’s planning to put some speed into the pedigree next year.
