DIBRUGARH/TINSUKIA: A large amount hail storm Officials said Tuesday that the sweep had swept through several areas upstream of Assam, damaging nearly 4,500 homes in four counties.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported, a total of 4,483 houses were damaged across 132 villages in Dibrugarh, CharaideoSivasagar and Tinsukia districts.
Nearly 18,000 people have been affected and families affected by the hail have been provided with sunshades.
An official with the Dibrugarh district government told PTI that severe hail hit the upper Assam regions late Monday and early Tuesday.
The ASDMA report said 4,481 homes were partially damaged, while two were completely destroyed.
A total of 3,009 houses were damaged in Charaideo, followed by Dibrugarh (1,232), Sivasagar (220) and Tinsukia (22).
Officials said several schools were also damaged along with crops on large swaths of farmland during the hailstorm, a rare phenomenon in this part of the state during the winter.
“Have directed officials to make a detailed assessment of the damage caused. The government is extending all possible help to all those affected by it,” said Minister Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Center in Guwahati has issued a ‘Yellow warning‘ for the entire northeast, and said thunderstorms and hail are most likely to occur in isolated areas across seven states.
The RMC, in a news release, said light snowfall was also “very likely” in isolated places upstream of the country. Arunachal Pradesh in the next 24 hours.
“Light to moderate rain is very likely in some parts of the rest of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Three chambers,” It says.
However, the bulletin noted that nighttime temperatures did not have a big change in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in the last 24 hours.
