As of Tuesday so far, 797 flights are expected to be canceled into or out of the United States.
Washington:
More than 1,000 flights into or out of the United States on Monday were canceled due to the severe winter storm, with about half of those coming from Southwest Airlines Co.
According to flight tracking service FlightAware, a total of 1,019 flights have been canceled as of 6:00 p.m. ET.
Low-cost carrier Southwest earlier this month faced backlash from the US government for canceling 16,700 flights over the holiday as it struggled with bad weather and outdated technology.
The company canceled about 12% of its schedule on Monday, while American Airlines Group Inc canceled 6%, or 200 flights.
The new cancellations come as the US aviation industry recovers from a nationwide shutdown imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) due to a computer problem.
As of Tuesday so far, 797 flights are expected to be canceled into or out of the United States.
Southwest Airlines and other major US airlines have issued winter weather waivers. The waiver allows customers to change itineraries with no fare difference if they remain in the same cabin as originally booked.
