Being a hero is no easy task and it is doubly difficult when you are the new savior on the block. With each new console generation comes new franchises and returning favorites. Everyone knows characters like Master Chief and Samus are great heroes – even some of our favorites – but there are new faces wearing masks for the first time, or those who have fought for their lives. What about all the disadvantages? What about those who simply fell into bad situations but have gotten better for it?

Those heroes are some of the best in recent memory, and with a few more outings in their future, it’s easy to see how they can become as iconic as Chief and Samus. any. Here are our favorite heroes of the generation so far, arranged in chronological order of appearance.

G’raha Tia

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalkers

Spoilers for Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers and Endwalker ahead.

Following the events of Shadowbringers, G’raha Tia became a new member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, but has not yet fully transformed from her previous life. Formerly a leader with great political and magical power, he now travels with the Warriors of Light and doesn’t know how to deal with some of the crises you face together. each other and struggle to find where he matches the Scissors. Throughout the Endwalker expansion, G’raha gradually regains his confidence and, in turn, his natural leadership skills as he is able to stay calm in the face of world-threatening pressure. Going from his humble beginnings as a historian to an extra-dimensional traveler may be the most exciting aspect of the adventure, but ultimately his rise from his friend companion becomes a loyal best friend, and Scion is worthy of being one of the best heroes of this generation.

Miles Morales

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Insomniac’s version of Miles Morales was first introduced in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2018. While we don’t see him actually turn into Spider-Man, this is clearly where Insomniac is headed for, and certainly, Marvel’s. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is out with PlayStation 5 in 2020. Through its eight hours, we’ve all come to know this already amazing character more and more, and perhaps most importantly, us. saw him become a necessary New York City defender in a time when Peter Parker wasn’t there to defend it. Miles appears at the other end of his journey a hero – not an inferior web robber or Peter fill, but an actual Spider-Man standing alongside the original. It’s heartwarming to watch the story unfold, and we’re excited to wear Miles’ signature red and black suit again in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Selene

Profit

In many ways, Selene is the new Samus. No, she’s not from Metroid, but, like Samus, she’s a stoic, alien-slayer, intent on completing the quest, no matter the cost. In Returnal, we’re introduced to Selene as such, and every action she takes through the game’s enigmatic story further proves our point. But Selene is more than seeing. Horror-like house sequences fill in the key storyline that completely changes the perspective of what’s going on, and several late-game revelations unearth all of that once again. Through it all, though, Selene is determined, capable, and the kind of space soldier we all want to be. We’re not sure what the future holds for Selene – something tells us it will be similar to the day before and the day before – but we can’t wait to see what Housemarque and PlayStation will do with it. her character.

Welder

Chicory: A colorful story

Wielder does not start the game as a hero. She is simply a janitor and fangirl of the savior of the world, Chicory. But when Chicory inexplicably locks herself in a tower, rendering the world colorless, this janitor picks up his broom and does what any hero does: save himself today . It’s a wild premise that quickly captivated us, and evolved from janitor to Picnic savior, where everyone, named after the dish, is enthralled. Additionally, Chicory’s message about overcoming impostor syndrome, seen through the eyes of The Wielder, who perceives it after picking up the cloak, is important, as is Chicory’s reliance on The Wielder. Wielder to deal with his depression. Ultimately, both will be better off relying on each other to overcome personal obstacles and insecurities. The Wielder is the hero who restored color, beauty, and life to her world. She is an inspiration to us and the future heroes of this generation. Not everyone can feel like a hero, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be one. We hope that Chicory is just the beginning of the adventures of this generation of The Wielder.

Kits

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Kit is a new character introduced in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, serving as Clank’s multiverse counterpart. Everyone knows the iconic duo of Ratchet & Clank as heroes, but Kit represents the inspiration the pair can have on others through their good deeds. When we meet Kit, she is emotionally mired by her villainous past. She’s a cyborg built for destruction, but she puts those inclinations aside to become a pacifist and ultimately better. Kit struggles with her misdeeds and is often self-doubting, but Ratchet instills in her the potential to help others. When no one else believed in her, Ratchet said, “I have.” Now, Kit is an ally that we can’t wait to see more of. Whether she’s kicking her ass or sitting down to gaze at the stars, Kit is the perfect face to remind us that imposter syndrome has no place in our lives.

Alex Chen

Life is Strange: True Colors

Alex Chen had quite a few achievements before her in Life is Strange: True Colors. Not only does she have to solve the mystery of her brother’s death while navigating as a new girl in a new town, but she also has to stand out in a series built on the shoulders of heroes. wonderful object. She did so with ease, and it’s clear she’ll be joining the ranks of the likes of Max Caulfield and Sean Diaz shortly after the start of True Colors’ first episode. Her powers, which show her using her empathy to read other people’s emotions and in some cases treat them as her own, are essential, but they are essential to Navigating her story because the storyline she goes through is quite inspiring. True Colors’ Alex Chen shows how important it is to trust your gut and why when you believe in something, you should fight it against all odds. Alex Chen accepts a mountain of corporate structures that are destined to silence her, but most importantly, she puts her love of friends and family above all else and perseveres for it. Life is Strange usually resumes after each entry, but we’re still hoping that True Colors isn’t the last we see of Alex Chen.

Colt Vahn

Deathloop

Colt Vahn becomes a character you want to spend more time playing like in the first few minutes of Deathloop. He ends up in an incredibly strange situation, and unlike most video game heroes, he asks, “what the hell is going on?” It’s great because it’s the same question we all would have if we woke up on a beach, destined to repeat the same day over and over again. He doesn’t try to harden it or hide his fear. In fact, he’s not even trying to be a hero, and you could argue he never became one by traditional standards. He’s just a guy who wants to break the loop so he can no longer be a part of it. He’s the kind of protagonist we can all respect – someone who has no idea what’s going on but perseveres. There are plenty of twists and turns to be found along the way, but in the end, Colt emerges as the unlikely hero we wished for more. Plus, he’s a Black lead who doesn’t rely on harmful stereotypes, which unfortunately rarely happens in the game. Hopefully, his success inspires developers to write more Black heroes because if Deathloop proves to be anything, it’s the game that needs and deserves more of them.

Drax

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

We all know Drax as a hero – he’s part of a very popular superhero team, after all – but Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands on the heartbreaking storyline that drives everything he does. he does. Yes, he defeated Thanos. Yeah, he’s virtually unstoppable, and if you look at him, you could write it down as, “well, look at him – you’re a beast.” But, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy emphasizes that it was the loss of the Drax family that gave him strength and kept him motivated to fight another day. This led to one of the most heartwarming and heartbreaking moments in the games of last year, where Drax had to painfully reconcile with his loss for the greater good, the moment that solidified Drax as he became. one of our favorite heroes. Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamora are great heroes in their own right, but Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy proved that Drax is the true heart of the group.

Weapons

Halo Infinite

It hasn’t been easy to stack up on one of the game’s most iconic heroes, Master Chief, but Cortana’s successor, The Weapon, has done it with ease in Halo Infinite. Cortana’s character took a turning point in Halo 5: Guardians, and while some fans weren’t happy with the direction, it was predestined and Halo Infinite had to deal with that. Weapon has done just that, bringing all of Cortana’s fun and optimism along with a hint of innocence and naivety that makes us so excited to take her on more world-saving missions in the coming weeks. future Halo entries. Cortana is almost irreplaceable, but fortunately, 343 Industries has found a way to replace her. And they did it in the best possible way: by introducing us to someone who didn’t want to be Cortana; Weapon simply wants to be himself.

Hello

Forbidden Horizon in the West

Aloy is a brilliant protagonist in 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn, but due to the nature of the game and its enveloping mystery, she doesn’t really become a hero of her own until the final hours of the series. game. However, Horizon Forbidden West is all about Aloy’s newfound stardom as Meridian’s (and world’s) savior, and we’ll get to see her achieve that title. She is steadfast in her commitment to helping people and will not stand aside when the authorities ask her to. If she believes in something, she commits to it and watching Aloy become the hero everyone says she is is incredibly satisfying. We can’t wait to see where her next journey takes us.
