Oprah Winfrey announced she would endorse Pennsylvania Senate candidate John Fetterman over Republican rival Mehmet Oz, a prominent doctor who rose to fame on her show in the early 2000s.

Democratic candidate Fetterman had been hoping to win Winfrey’s approval for months, due to her status and influence over women and blacks. The closely contested Senate race in Pennsylvania is an important one in the 2022 midterm elections, with Democrats and Republicans holding equal seats in the US Senate.

“[At the beginning of the midterm campaigns,] I said it’s up to the citizens of Pennsylvania, but I’ll tell you all this – if I lived in Pennsylvania, I would have cast my vote for John Fetterman, for a variety of reasons,” Winfrey said in a statement. virtual event Thursday.

Fetterman Campaign spokesman Joe Calvello called Oprah’s endorsement of Fetterman a “devastating rebuke to Dr. Oz.”

“One by one, those who knew Oz best came out against him and made it clear that he should not serve in the United States Senate,” he wrote in a press release.

Winfrey, a liberal known for her star power, campaign for Barack Obama in 2007 before the Democratic primaries, voiced support for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and actively supported President Joe Biden in 2020.

Winfrey too visited Georgia in 2018 to campaign for Democrat Stacey Abrams in her previous run for governor of Georgia and once again show support for Abrams in her rematch with incumbent Republican Brian Kemp.

Those candidates believed Winfrey’s broad appeal. Former President Donald Trump even told CNN talk show host Larry King in 1999 that Winfrey would his top pick for a running mate.

“I love Oprah. Oprah will always be my first choice,” Trump said. “If she does that, she’ll be amazing. She’s famous. She’s brilliant. She’s a wonderful woman.”

At Thursday’s event, Winfrey also voiced support for other Democratic candidates in key Senate and governor races at the virtual event, including Cheri Beasley of North Carolina, Val Demings of Florida, Mandela Barnes of Wisconsin, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Beto O’Rourke of Texas, and Georgia’s Raphael Warnock and Stacey Abrams.

“There are obvious options out there,” Winfrey said. “So use your wits and choose wisely for our country’s democracy.”
