Opinion | It’s Time, Again, for My Brother Kevin

This Thanksgiving, for the first time in years, my brother Kevin and I can both say we’re fed up with Donald Trump. But that doesn’t mean he and I agree on many other things. Again, here’s Kevin with his annual view from the right side of the Dowd family:

The midterm elections are over and the results are disappointing. The red wave didn’t materialize, Democrats and President Biden paid no price for their actions over the past 22 months.

These include the defeat in Afghanistan; cashless bail, favoring criminals over victims; the highest inflation in 40 years; a two-year invasion of our southern border; record gas prices; one dangerous capital withdrawal of strategic petroleum reserves; further deterioration of our education system; the weakening of our army; and fully embrace the awakening to divide the country. All of that, with the president’s approval rating deep water and 81 percent among Americans who believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, should have created a surge in Republican anticipation. But the president who emerged from the elections thought the Democrats’ relatively good fortunes were due to his policies, not in spite of them.

Republicans bear a large part of the blame. Their message came late or didn’t exist, allowing Democrats to convince wavering voters that the only issues that matter were Trump, abortion, and the perceived threat to the economy. our democracy.

Candidates must match their district. Don’t choose a conservative for a moderate district. Rick Scott and Lindsey Graham’s inroads into hot issues have been damaging. Republicans must convince supporters to vote early, not wait until Election Day. Democrats often lead by early voting, forcing Republicans to fall behind.

Donald Trump is radioactive. His insistence on selecting candidates based on their loyalty to him led Republicans to lose control of the Senate in successive elections, and his attacks on Republicans. Other peace is despicable. Historians will judge his presidency more generously than the media today, and we will forever be indebted to him for saving our country and the Supreme Court from Hillary. Clinton, but his effect is over.

His announcement that he would run for re-election was greeted with resounding silence from Republicans the next day. Rupert Murdoch stripped Fox of his formidable defense. Trump’s isolation was evident at his announcement party, where the only member of Congress in sight is Madison Cawthorn, who lost her own primaries.

A third Trump run would simply settle old scores with political and press enemies and ignore the repair work the GOP needs to do.

The Democratic Party’s better-than-expected results encouraged Mr. Biden, to the detriment of the nation. He will likely run for re-election (he will be 82 at his second inauguration) and said after the midterm elections that he intends to “change nothing”. “The more they know about what we’re doing, the more support there is,” he said, as if his policies were a delicious bœuf bourguignon simmering under the heat of simmering inflation. .

There are some bright spots. Republicans won the House of Representatives and ended Nancy Pelosi’s miserable reign. With that victory, the purse strings will cause Democratic extravagance to slide.

The Republicans’ first order of business should be to impeach the obnoxious Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security who presided over the disgraceful situation at the border, despite his incompetence as a badge of honor. In just the last financial year under his supervision, more than 2.4 million won migrants were caught at the border, more than 500,000 won have evaded capture, and more 850 people died happened.

Republican hopes for 2024 must rest with their new superstar, Ron DeSantis, who win nearly 60 percent of the vote in the Florida governor re-election race, paving the way for four new members of the GOP House. His handling of Hurricane Ian is just his latest feat, based on his popular defense of parents’ rights in education, his support for police and the war against sobriety.

lockdown pandemic, promote by teachers’ unions, leading to a dramatic drop in national test scores and pulling back the curtain on what children are taught. I don’t want my elementary school grandchildren to hear about sex from a stranger or be labeled an “oppressor”. Stick to math and reading; yes big room to improve.

Republicans now have to wait two more years to atone. The 2024 Senate field has Democrats defending 23 seats. With two more years of Biden’s policy missteps, rising crime in our major cities, monstrous inflation, and an impending recession, Republicans should have another golden opportunity. Carpe diem.

Here is hope for the new year,

Kevin.
