Opinion | Have Both Democrats and Republicans Lost Touch With Their Voters?

By the usual rules of politics, Democrats should be on track for this November election disaster. Joe Biden’s approval rating is stuck at 42%, inflation remains sky-high, and midterms are often against the incumbent president’s party – a recipe for the kind of political obliteration we’ve seen. we saw in 2018, 2010 and 1994.

But that’s not what the polls show. Now, Democrats are on track to hold the Senate and narrowly lose the House, which raises all sorts of questions: Why aren’t Republicans taking advantage of such favorable circumstances? How did the Democrats get into this situation – and can they get out of it? And should we trust the polls that give us this information in the first place?

Matt Yglesias is a veteran journalist, newsletter writer “Slowly Bored” and co-host of the podcast “Bad Takes.” And in recent years, he has become an outspoken critic of the Democratic Party’s political strategy: how the Democrats communicate with the public, what they choose as their governing priorities, and ultimately with whom they will listen. In Yglesias’ view, Democrats have lost touch with the very voters they need to win these near-term elections and should adopt a very different political approach if they want to defeat an increasingly anti-democratic Republican.

We discuss why Yglesias thinks the 2022 polls are likely to favor Democrats, how the odd Republican candidate selection is giving Democrats a fighting chance to win the Senate, why does Biden’s popular legislative program not translate into greater public support, “Biden bag administration” for policymaking, why Yglesias thinks there is a” “regime change” in the way Democrats think about elections, how social media has transformed the political dynamics of both parties, what the Democratic agenda would look like if the party This retains both houses of Congress and over.
