OpenAI’s new model spec reveals more about how it wants AI to work
OpenAI has been leading the general AI space since its launch ChatGPT, setting many precedents for future AI development. To that end — and to further increase transparency with the public — OpenAI has shared a new document that helps users gain a deeper understanding of its AI models.
On Wednesday, OpenAI release the first draft of the Model Specification, a document that outlines how the startup wants its models to perform in the OpenAI and ChatGPT APIs. Model Spec is also intended to provide insight into how OpenAI makes decisions about the behavior of its models.
Model behavior refers to how AI models respond to user input, including characteristics such as tone, response length, etc. OpenAI explains that AI models are not programmed Clear processes that learn from data; Therefore, shaping their behavior is still a “nascent science” with many nuances that need explaining.
Model Spec documents how OpenAI approaches the complex task of shaping model behavior, including experience and ongoing research on the topic. OpenAI explained that it is not yet using the Model Spec “in its current form” but is working on techniques that would allow its models to learn directly from the spec.
In the document, OpenAI breaks down three principles of the Model Spec: goals, which include supporting developers and end users and benefiting humanity; Rule; and default behavior, which refers to instructions consistent with goals and rules.
The company said it is sharing Model Spec with the public as a guide for AI researchers and trainers working with reinforcement learning based on human feedback. By sharing documents, OpenAI seeks to increase transparency about its models with its audience and gather all stakeholder feedback on its approach.

The Sample specification response form Open until May 22. All interested parties are encouraged to complete the form, regardless of technical expertise.
Model Spec aligns with OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to increase trust with stakeholders in its models. Just this week, OpenAI is released a new tool that can detect AI images created with its own DALL-E 3 engine.
