OpenAI uses Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT without permission: All the details

Scarlett Johansson released a statement on Monday about OpenAI using a ChatGPT voice, which closely resembles her own. Previously, there was information that OpenAI asked the actress to become the voice of ChatGPT but she clearly refused this request. However, after being rejected, the company continued to use Johansson’s voice for the chatbot. On the other hand, OpenAI denied that it used Johansson’s voice for its new ChatGPT-4o chatbot. Johansson also emphasized that Altman’s team contacted her agent just two days before release to reconsider. However, it was made public before they could connect. The statement also mentioned that they had no other option but to hire a legal advisor to write a formal letter to OpenAI and Sam Altam regarding the same. It was also mentioned that the action was intentional as Altman shared a one-word post from the X handle that read “Her,” a reference to how the actor voices the chat system, Samantha In the movie.

Shortly after Johansson’s statement was made, OpenAI announced the removal of Sky’s voice to address “how we select voices in ChatGPT.”

The Verge quote Sam Altman’s statement said: “Sky’s voice is not Scarlett Johansson’s and it was never intended to sound like hers. We recruited a voice actor to voice Sky before approaching Ms. Johansson. Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have stopped using Sky’s voice in our productions. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we did not communicate better.”
