Like Google, Meta and Microsoft, OpenAI offers online chatbots and other AI tools that can write social media posts, create photorealistic images and write computer programs. In its report, the company said its tools were used in influence campaigns that researchers have tracked for years, including a Russian campaign called Doppelganger and a China’s campaign is called Spamouflage.
OpenAI said the Doppelganger campaign used OpenAI’s technology to generate anti-Ukrainian comments posted on X in English, French, German, Italian and Polish. The company said OpenAI tools were also used in a previously unknown Russian campaign targeting people in Ukraine, Moldova, the Baltic states and the United States, primarily through messaging services. OpenAI says political comments receive very few responses and “likes.” Efforts are sometimes not at all complicated. At one point, the campaign posted text that was clearly AI-generated. “As an AI language model, I am here to assist and provide comments as desired,” one post said. At other points, it posted in poor English, leading OpenAI to call the effort “Bad Grammar.”
Spamouflage, long believed to be Chinese, used OpenAI technology to debug code, seek advice on social media analysis and research current events, OpenAI said. Its tools were also used to create social media posts disparaging former critics of the Chinese government.
