OpenAI Begins Rolling Out Enhanced Voice Mode to Paid ChatGPT Users: What It Is and How It Works

OpenAI has begun rolling out its latest Advanced Voice Mode feature to a limited number of paid ChatGPT subscribers for testing. The new feature allows users to experience more natural conversations in real time. Here’s everything you need to know about the new ChatGPT feature.

Enhanced voice mode interacts naturally with users

The enhanced speech mode is capable of responding to natural interactions, including sarcasm, humor, and more, in real time. Just like human nature, users may interrupt during these interactions. While the current ChatGPT speech model converts the user’s speech to text and vice versa, the new model does not, resulting in improved one-on-one interactions without latency.

First demonstration of OpenAI’s enhanced speech mode

In early May, OpenAI demonstrated the capabilities of Enhanced Voice Mode by releasing an AI-generated voice call from Sky that closely resembled Scarlett Johansson’s voice. However, Johansson has made a public statement about the matter, saying the voice was developed without her consent. According to reports, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, made multiple offers to Johansson to use her voice behind ChatGPT. In the statement, Johansson expressed her “shock, anger, and disbelief” at Altman’s move to create a voice that was “eerily similar” to her own.

Altman clarified that Sky’s voice was not created with the intention of resembling Johansson’s. The voice was taken down when Johansson took the issue to legal counsel.

OpenAI is working to make enhanced voice mode more reliable

OpenAI says that since its first recording using Advanced Voice Mode, the company has been working to improve the quality and safety of voice interactions. Currently, Advanced Voice Mode is programmed to speak in four voices and includes a built-in system that detects and blocks voices that don’t match those voices. This ensures that the feature doesn’t mimic the voices of celebrities.

OpenAI has introduced “implemented barriers” that prevent the new speech model from generating speech related to copyrighted content. The company will use feedback from the testing phase to further improve the new speech feature.

OpenAI will send emails with instructions to users selected to test the new Enhanced Voice Mode. The company is reportedly considering giving access to more users on an ongoing basis. Plus users are expected to get access to Enhanced Voice Mode this fall.
