Only around one in five trains to run during today’s rail strike | UK News

Rail passengers are experiencing travel chaos as only a fifth of trains are set to run today due to another strike.

More than 40,000 members of the Rail, Marine and Transport (RMT) union at Network Rail and 15 train operators are organizing a walk about jobs, wages and conditions.

About half of the network will be closed for the day, and trains will only operate between 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Passengers are being advised to “take the train only if absolutely necessary on Saturday”.

Services will begin later than usual on Sunday morning when workers return to work.

Before the strike, Secretary General Mick Lynch wrote to Transport Secretary Anne Marie Trevelyan urging her to “unchain” the rail companies and allow them to reach an agreement with the rail unions. .

Mr Lynch wrote: “I am writing following your comments at the Conservative Party Conference last weekend in which you said there was an ‘agreement to be made’ between the rail unions and the car companies fire related to ongoing industrial disputes.

“I also hope that a negotiated agreement can be reached between the RMT and the employer.

“In order to achieve this, however, your government must dismantle the ship operators who are now taking the mandate directly from you.”

Disruption ‘inevitable’ in strikes

In a statement, the Department for Transport urged union bosses to work with their employers “not against them”.

“For the third time this week and the second weekend in a row, we have faced disruption and disruption on our rail lines,” a spokesman said.

“Weekend rail travel has been on the rise since the pandemic hit as people travel to support their favorite sports teams, meet loved ones or attend events. This plan is now at stake and our economy is damaged.

“Our railways are in dire need of modernization but all the strikes will do is punish the very people the unions claim to stand up for and push passengers further away.

“We urge union bosses to reconsider this divisive act and instead work with their employers, not against them, to agree a new direction.”

It follows the latest strikes last Saturday and Wednesday.

Passengers should check National Rail Inquiries or their train operator’s website for up-to-date information.

Those with tickets for the Saturday whose cruise is canceled or rescheduled will receive a refund, or they can travel on another date up to and including Tuesday 11 October.

Season ticket holders are entitled to compensation through a delayed return program.
