OnePlus forgot about the smartphone maker and announced… mechanical keyboard?
OnePlus has announced that it is creating, or rather co-creating, a Mechanical keyboardit’s a bit of a curve for a company known for smartphone.
To be fair, OnePlus does not produce any other set of accessories besides smartphones – like headphoneand a smart watch – but we don’t see a mechanical keyboard coming. However, as the company tells us, it is moving in this direction due to popular demand.
The keyboard will be manufactured in conjunction with the Keychron and the project has been launched as part of the ‘OnePlus Features’ co-creation platform. This is basically where the company works with partners to produce things that OnePlus users have voted for, with the first popular project being this keyboard.
So what’s the deal with the actual peripheral itself? We’ve been told by OnePlus very little valuable information about the product, be aware it will be ‘customizable’ and, that’s all the company has revealed at this stage, noting that More details will be revealed in early 2023.
If you want to learn more about the OnePlus mechanical keyboard, you can subscribe to the OnePlus Features platform where you will receive notifications about new developments.
Analysis: Definitely more than just a light party
Surely this is something a little different for OnePlus. About what a ‘customizable’ mechanical keyboard entails; that could theoretically be as simple as being able to choose from a million and one different RGB lighting styles and effects – you know, just like anything else gaming keyboard out there.
However, OnePlus may be planning something more in-depth, and that seems very likely as partner company Keychron discusses customization in depth on its website. It covers topics like replacing keycaps, stabilizers (which determine the ‘feel’ of a key press) and various detachable cables. Therefore, and the fact that customizability is clearly the standout feature – because that is the only thing this initial press release mentions – we expect more than just the ability to control the LEDs. .
Hopefully we’ll find out more in January, although the ‘early next year’ time frame for the first drop of pertinent information could really mean any time during the first quarter. Expect to see other projects undertaken by OnePlus through this new co-creation platform in the future.
