One dead, many injured after car crashes into cafe
One person was killed and several others injured after a car crashed into the terrace of a cafe in Paris on Wednesday.
All of the injured were customers of the cafe, said county Mayor Eric Pliez.
The driver initially fled the scene in the 20th arrondissement of the French capital, but was later arrested, police added.
The motive for the incident remains unclear, but a police source told AFP news agency it appeared to be a traffic accident.
France is on high security alert ahead of the Olympic Games, which open in Paris in nine days.
Police had earlier cordoned off the area near where the car crashed, which French media reported was the Le Ramus restaurant on the corner of Avenue du Père-Lachaise and Rue Ramus.
The incident happened at 19:30 local time (17:30 GMT).
A passenger in the vehicle reportedly tested positive for alcohol. There was no word on the driver’s condition in local reports.
Police and rescue workers remained at the scene on Wednesday evening.
