A runner-up defending his Gold Cup title last September and again at GI Clark H. in November, the 5-year-old will look to return to the wins during his 2022 debut in Alysheba.

Max Player (Honor code), who finished fifth in the 2020 GI Kentucky Derby in his only previous start at Churchill Downs, won the Gold Cup and Countryside last year, but never made the list when he finished eighth in The GI Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 6. Both of his 2021 qualifying wins are 1 1/4 miles and Alysheba’s 1/16-mile run will be his shortest ride since since the first pass crossed a mile in December 2019.
