Ollie Sangster joins Coaching Ranking

The Sangster name is commonly seen in the ranks of owners and breeders, and from later this year it will also be on training permits, with Ollie Sangster set to train from his historic estate his family is in Manton.

The 25-year-old certainly has a background in racing: his grandfather is the legendary Robert Sangster, known to his friends and associates MV O’Brien and John Magnier by the nicknames ‘The Brethren’, while his father Ben was also a rancher. note, with Luxembourg (Ire) and Changeoftheguard (Ire) being among his current notable performers.

An amateur rider who won a championship on the Flat track before his height made that chase a bit difficult, Ollie Sangster’s skills in the saddle were most recently seen in public while riding. Wesley Ward athlete to post on Strike The Tiger, who was tragically killed in a burning warehouse in March of this year.

“I would say it was probably my most formative period,” says Sangster in his two years with Ward, who has pursued David Hayes in Australia and Charlie Hills in Lamborn, as well as a prep season. full of longing.

“I think the way the American system works, it’s a bit like Australia, sometimes you get thrown in a little bit deep and get to experience different cages in different states. So I’d say it’s been the best time for me and I have a great relationship with Wesley.

“I have been taking care of his international athletes for the past three years since then and I will say I learned more during my time there than I thought I could learn in 10 years. about practice riding. Wesley is a true horseman.”

Sangster initially considered starting their training in the US, but visa problems caused them to rethink. He succeeded George Boughey as assistant coach at Hugo Palmer’s Newmarket stable before spending the last two years with Joseph O’Brien in Ireland.

“I wanted to spread my wings again and that was really cool,” he said of his time at Property Hill. “Joseph is a nice and wonderful man to work with; he is a very wise man on young shoulders. “

Now, Sangster is on his own, ramping up sales as he completes the BHA modules needed by any aspiring UK coach, with the hope that things will work out well at Manton by Last year.

“I will go to all the sales that I can and will try to pick up a few horses,” he said.

At Manton, he would share the track with resident trainers Brian Meehan and Martyn and Freddie Meade, and he knew full well that he had lied about the riding land out there to Meehan since 12 years old. age.

Sangster continued, “I get along well with Brian, Martyn, and Freddie. Obviously I ran for Brian and I ran races for him, and he was a good family friend. Whatever I want to talk about, you can’t beat someone who can gallop.

“Martyn did a lot of work with the gallop. When I came back not too long ago, we had hot weather like this and Brian was herding his horses on the lawn, and I thought to myself: ‘He’s barking madly, it must be like a road. ‘. And hey, I watched them in action and it really is a beautiful summer ground. It’s amazing how good the old grass is.”

One of the other trainers Sangster has been keeping an eye on since late at night is Jane Chapple-Hyam because he’s part owner of her stable of star Saffron Beach (Ire) along with his mother Lucy and James Wigan. The original Group 1 double winner was purchased as a pony for 55,000gns to stake until a foot injury meant she missed out on her next sales.

“It was the luckiest thing ever,” he said. “That’s part of what will give me the opportunity to come here, have had a great trip with her. Obviously, Jane and her entire team have done a great job. It’s been a great journey and hopefully it’s not over yet. “

While Chapple-Hyam’s stable is thriving after some impressive results, Sangster has more modest ambitions for launching his own coaching career.

“I’ll just start with a small number of horses and we’ll start from there,” he noted. “But it is a real privilege. Obviously I am very lucky to have the opportunity to come here. It’s always been a dream of mine and I’ll see how it plays out. That’s all you can do: trust what you’ve learned, put a few things in place and start it. “
