Ollie Pope scored 136 balls from 131 on his first day against Yorkshire

Surrey claimed the LV=Insurance County Championship Division One title after a convincing win over Yorkshire after Ollie Pope recorded 136 of 131 serves on the first day.

Surrey’s victory on Tuesday at The Oval clinched the county’s second title in five years – and 21st overall – as rival Hampshire, who needed a win to stay in the Championship race, lost. Kent 77 rounds.

Needing just 55 runs to win the second inning, openers Rory Burns and Ryan Patel secured the title for Surrey in just six rounds.

Daniel Worrall was the pitchers’ pick for Surrey, finishing with a 4-61, while Kemar Roach and Jamie Overton both won two one-piece clubs.

Adam Lyth and Dom Bess were over 40 years old, but Surrey proved to be superior during the Test Match.

Pope runs in the yard again

The Pope of England continues to race, scored 136 in the first inning to help Surrey get a high score of 333.

Surrey was in a precarious position with an 82-3 lead and by the time Jordan Clarke came in, Surrey was leading 136-6.

But the seventh partnership between Pope and Clarke, who had been bowling in 55, brought Surrey to nearly 300.

Chasing 333, the Surrey archers were relentless and managed to land four grabs in 30 rounds.

Half a century of Tom Kohler-Cadmore and 45 absences of captain Jonathan Tattersall is not enough, as Yorkshire has gone with 179 men.

Thomas Lawes finished 4-31, as Surrey captain Burns executed the sequel.

It was a similar story in the second half for Yorkshire, who could only put Surrey 55 runs to win.

Knowing that one win would be enough to secure the title, Burns and Patel made easy totals.

Hampshire flatters to fool Kent

Hampshire’s title hopes were ended by Kent, who overtook the winner by 77 runs in three days at the Ageas Bowl.

The win boosted Kent’s Division One hopes of survival and sent Gloucestershire into relegation.

James Fuller missed 78 and James Vince 73 for Hampshire, but they were eliminated with 300.

Hampshire has won five of its previous six home games, the other being a rain draw against Lancashire in April.

Gloucestershire relegated despite victory

Tom Price produced the best performance of an inspiring career with eight goals for 23 and combined the numbers 10 for 73 to help Gloucestershire to a three-goal win over Warwickshire at Bristol.

Gloucestershire picked up 21 points, but their first win in 13 attempts in red and black cricket this summer came too late to save them relegation.

As for Warwickshire, they are still second from the bottom of the table and, with one game to play, look like taking on Gloucestershire in Division Two next year.

Somerset in the driver’s seat

Somerset will go into the final day of the match against Northamptonshire at Taunton with a firm footing, knowing victory will ensure Division One’s survival.

With still a 401 lead and nine goals in the second half, the hosts can be confident of at least one draw, which would put them 17 points ahead of second Warwickshire.

Worcestershire beat Nottinghamshire

Division Two leaders Nottinghamshire suffered only their second defeat of the season after losing once and 79 games to Worcestershire at New Road.

The home side collected the remaining four points of the Nottinghamshire second half within 70 minutes as they were knocked out 183 in 52.2 rounds.

Middlesex in command against Leicestershire

Middlesex are on the verge of a win that will put them in a straight competition for the title after Leicestershire’s flimsy strike scuppered their good fortune on the ball.

Skipper Callum Parkinson took four 69 goals and young swinger Rehan Ahmed scored a career-best three goals with a score of 50 as Middlesex fell from 209 to three to 271 all in their second half, losing The last seven goals with 62 points behind Mark Stoneman (81) and Max Holden (91) have booked 165 for the fourth game.

It led the nucleus at Leicestershire to hit a fourth-half goal of 275 to score their first win of the season. Instead, they are struggling deeply in 13th place out of four who go on the final day.

Glamorgan close to victory over Derbyshire

New Zealand tennis player Ajaz Patel claimed his first five-game win for Glamorgan to help them finish with a home win over Derbyshire.

Wales needed seven more doubles on the final day to keep the pressure on Middlesex in the race for second promotion.

Durham took a wicket at Seat Unique Riverside before the rain intervened to stop their winning charge against Sussex with nine to four.
