The jurors were asked not to be swayed by the “emotional reaction” as they were sworn in during the murder trial of Olivia Pratt-Korbel.

Ten men and two women have been selected to serve on the jury at Manchester Crown Court to try Thomas Cashman, who is accused of fatal shooting. nine year old girl.

The 34-year-old is accused of being the gunman responsible for the fatal shooting of Olivia at her home in Dovecot, Liverpool, just after 10pm on August 22 last year.

Her mother Cheryl Korbel, 46, was injured in the shooting when the gunman chased Joseph Nee into their home.

Twelve jurors are chosen from a panel of 60 and selected along with two men who will sit as “backup” jurors for the opening session.

Mrs Justice Yip told them how important it was not to let themselves be “affected by any emotional reaction or sympathy”.

“Naturally, the death of a child, any child, is a sensitive topic and a normal subject when it comes to emotional reactions,” she said.

“It’s very important to you in doing your job as a juror that you put those feelings aside so that you can properly consider the case and the issues you need to consider. .”

Mrs Justice Yip said: “I mention it now because if you know of a heavy police presence in and around the building, you shouldn’t be surprised by it, you shouldn’t be worried about it. there.

“It’s completely normal that we have serious cases going on in this building.”

Before the jurors were selected, Ms Justice Yip said: “I realize that many of you will have heard of Olivia’s death, at the time there were a lot of reports about it.

“If you’ve seen or heard the news reports, you may have formed some opinion at the time.

“It’s completely natural if you feel shocked and upset about it, you probably talked about it with family and friends at the time, as we all tend to do.

“The jury that will hear the case will be presented with all the evidence.

“Of course, no one has yet heard any evidence, so any opinion you or anyone else had at the time of the news report was not the informed opinion that the jury would have. when they come to the end of the case.

“The verdict that the jury makes will be based on the evidence they hear in court and not on anything else.”

Olivia’s family, including her parents and siblings, sat in the courtroom by the dock, where Cashman was escorted by four officers.

Cashman’s relatives sat in the public gallery at the back of the courthouse on the first day of the trial, which will be opened on Tuesday by David McLachlan KC, prosecutor.

Cashman, from West Derby, has denied killing Olivia, as well as conspiring to kill Nee and intentionally wounding Olivia’s mother.

He also denies two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
