Official: Porsche Boxster and Cayman to go electric by 2025

Porsche announced its next mid-engine 718 Cayman and Boxer Sports cars will phase out the internal combustion engine in favor of pure electric power by the middle of this decade.

Next from Taycan and coming soon Macan EV Scheduled to launch next year, the future electric Cayman and Boxster will join the brand’s other full electric models. However, the new sports coupe and cabriolet will be based on a new custom-built electric vehicle platform, adapted from Porsche’s Mission R concept.

Speaking at the Porsche business update, CEO Oliver Blume said, “Mission R will be the inspiration for our 718 range of mid-engine sports cars. In the middle of the decade, we want to electrify this series. We want to make the 718 series run solely on electricity.”

When it comes to the new architecture of the 718 range, Blume added: “We will have a platform for our two-door sports cars and a platform for our four-door sports cars.” He also confirmed that Boxster and Cayman production will continue at the Zuffenhausen plant in Germany.
