NYTB, SUNY Cobleskill Launches Purebred Industry Course

New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc., and SUNY Cobleskill will partner to offer an accredited course for upperclassmen in the Animal Science program to experience all aspects of the livestock and racing industries. The course, which runs from late August to early December, aligns with the NYTB’s goal of reaching out to students interested in equine studies and finding the next generation of the workforce and riders. leader in the racing and livestock industry. The goal of the program is to introduce students to all aspects of the thoroughbred racing and crossbreeding industry through a consistent schedule of Zoom sessions and on-site visits.

Expected schedule of the course:

  • August: An introduction to the track and visits to the governing offices of the New York Racing Association and the National Museum of Racing in Saratoga Springs;
  • October: Breeding and Sales–via Zoom and attending the NYTB October Workshop and Fasig-Tipton Saratoga October Mixed Sales;
  • September: In-depth horseback tour at Saratoga Racecourse and horse wellness visit via Zoom and at Rood & Riddle in Saratoga Springs;
  • November: Visit the livestock farm directly and via Zoom.

NYTB President Tom Gallo and SUNY Cobleskill Associate Professor of Animal Science, Raymond Whelihan, collaborated to develop the program.
