After starting the new year with a winning pair, Scaling up (c, 4, Nyquist–Hot Water, by Medaglia d’Oro) continued its ascension with a decision more archaic than supported Cody’s Wish (Curlin) while launching its stake in GIII Michelob Ultra Challenger S. in Tampa on Saturday. Move one (Union Rags) is the third.
A 5-1 chance gets you a good ride in the outer third. He has his sights set on long-leg lead Cody’s Wish, who won three in a row at Churchill last fall, also up one point out of him. Pacesetting Wolfie’s Dynaghost (Ghostzapper) is the first to blink in the interval and it belongs to Scalding and Cody’s Wish. Cody’s Wish looks daring on the outside and looks as if he’s on his way, but Scalding isn’t done yet, and has beaten that opponent for a tough win. Beating well into eighth on his debut with a seven-seat stretch at the Aqueduct on November 11, Scalding went a long way to a second one-mile stretch in Ozone Park. on December 2. Sent south for the winter and aiming for two-legs, the dark Bay kicked off his 4-year-old season with his first win while debuting his route in Gulfstream on January 5, then added a flashy 5 1/4 length option claimant at Tampa last time on February 11.
“It’s been a big stipend / not a condition,” says McGaughey, “but we’ve always liked this horse. “He has trained forward and from what we see today, his future is certainly [bright]. He had a race on the track, and I think that probably helped him. He is quite a talented figure and his last two races have been very good, with a little encouragement from the owners we decided to take a shot and it was a success. ”
Scalding added to the big day as co-owners win LNJ Foxwoods. The Roth family is also represented by the G1 Coolmore Classic Lighthouse (Mizzen Mast) heroine in Australia.
