NYC raises minimum wages for Uber and Lyft drivers

Uber and Lyft drivers in New York City are about to get a raise. Last week, NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city would raise the minimum driver wage for both Uber and Lyft, as of 2018. Both rain-riding apps will pay their NYC drivers a minimum of $1,161 per mile and $0.529 per minute, or an increase of about 5.3%.

That’s the first good news for contract workers in one of the world’s most expensive cities for a while. NYC hail truck drivers spent past several years of fighting for union rights, which would allow them to bargain for better pay and workplace benefits. However, a union has yet to materialize despite numerous protests.

“Uber, Lyft and Via drivers are part of the largest private sector workforce in the state. They are a mainstay in many neighborhoods and the majority are immigrant blacks working to transition out of poverty,” said Bhairavi Desai, executive director of the New York Taxi Workers Union, a representative group for riders and taxi drivers in the city, said. . “We all know the prices of basic necessities, like bread and milk, have increased, and for motorists, operating costs, such as fuel and repairs, have also increased. This 3% will help thousands of families find safety and provide more opportunities to live in better conditions.”

NYC’s gains are the latest victory in a global effort to improve the livelihoods of contract economic drivers. Uber and Lyft are currently locked in a war in and California on classifying drivers as “independent contractors,” a label that frees both companies from paying drivers minimum wages, overtime and other benefits. Last August, a judge ruled that a California ballot measure that classifies drivers who call vehicles as contractors as a decision that Uber and Lyft are appealing.
