Nvidia Announces GeForce RTX 4090, 4080 GPUs: Real-Time Ray Tracing, DLSS3, ‘Neural Rendering’, AV1 Encoding

Nvidia has unveiled the first two GPUs in the long-anticipated GeForce RTX 40 series, the new GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080. Based on the new ‘Ada Lovelace’ architecture, these high-end models promise twice the performance. 4 times over the previous ‘Ampere’ architecture as well as improved power efficiency. Nvidia also announced its new DLSS3 image upscaling technology, which is said to be able to generate entire frames independent of the PC’s CPU. The company says its third-generation ray tracing cores and fourth-generation Tensor cores dramatically accelerate ray tracing and floating-point acceleration, enabling the “age of neural rendering.”

Nvidia announced that graphics cards based on GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080 will be designed and sold by partner brands including Asus, Zotac, Gigabytes, MSI, Innovision 3D, Palit, Colorful and others. These will include pre-existing and factory overclocked models. However, there is no mention of any Founders Edition cards being sold by Nvidia itself. Pre-built computers using these GPUs will also be available from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Cherry, MSI, Alienwareand others.

The new flagship GeForce RTX 4090 GPU has 76 billion transistors in total. It has 16,384 CUDA cores and the card will have 24GB of GDDR6X RAM. The rated power consumption is 450W. With DLSS3 enabled, this GPU is said to be 4x faster than the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti with DLSS2. Nvidia also promises consistent >100fps frame rates at 4K in today’s games. The GeForce RTX 4090 card will be available worldwide starting October 12, and Nvidia’s suggested price is $1,599 (about Rs. 1,27,575 before tax) though partners will set their own prices.

Confusingly, there will be two versions of GeForce RTX 4080 with different number of CUDA cores as well as different amounts of RAM. The GeForce RTX 4080 16GB has 9,728 CUDA cores while the GeForce RTX 4080 12GB has 7,680 cores. Both must be faster than the previous generation GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. Suggested prices are $1,199 (approximately Rs. 95,650) and $899 (approximately Rs. 71,725) respectively.

While new mid-range and affordable GPUs have not been announced yet, the introduction of the new high-end GeForce 40 series plus the recent drop in GPU mining demand thanks to Ethereum Consolidation could lead to a drop in the price of previous generation models. The old GPU has appeared

DLSS3 will arrive on the Frostbite, Unreal and Unity game engines with over 35 innovative games and apps onboard including Hogwarts Legacy, Microsoft Flight Simulator and Cyberpunk 2077. Nvidia says it can work around the limitations limits CPU power by generating the entire frame. New architecture-level capabilities include Instant Shader Execution Sequencer for improved efficiency and 3X better performance, as well as Ada Optical Flow Accelerator that predicts movement between objects frame on the screen.

The new architecture allows dual NVENC media encoders to work together to cut output time in half. AV1 encoding is supported. Players can use improved virtual backgrounds, and modders can use the new RTX Remix engine to add ray tracing effects to “remaster” classic games.

Nvidia’s own Lightspeed Studio remixed the hit classic game Portal with ray tracing to give it a whole new look, just before its 15th anniversary. It will be available as an official, free DLC in November.
