Nutritional drinks including purified varieties and recovered glucerna

Lyons Magnus, a nutritional drink company, has extended a voluntary recall of several popular product categories, including Oedly oat drink, Optimum Nutrition protein powder and Glucerna milkshake, because of potential microbial contamination , the company and the federal government said this week.

The company said in a statement on July 28 that no illnesses or complaints related to the recalled products have been reported. A company statement on Wednesday announced that more products had been recalled but did not say if anyone had been sick and a spokeswoman declined to comment on news reports.

The Food and Drug Administration posted a list of 89 products, along with batch numbers and case numbers related to the recall, which came after “continued cooperation and consultation” with the agency. , the company said in its statement. The company said some of the recalled products were distributed nationwide.

The statement says that “root cause analysis” indicates that the products do not meet “commercial sterility specifications.”

FDA officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday night.

The recalled brands include Organic Valley and Stumptown Cold Brew Coffee milks.

The company says that the recalled products are likely contaminated with harmful organisms including Cronobacter sakazakii and Clostridium botulinum. Cronobacter sakazakii is a bacteria that can cause life-threatening infections or inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine. Clostridium botulinum is a bacteria that produces dangerous toxins that can cause a severe form of food poisoning, according to the World Health Organization.

“Although Clostridium botulinum was not found in the products, consumers are advised not to consume any of the recalled products even if they do not look or smell spoiled,” the company said in a statement. The statement was also posted on the websites of the US Food and Drug Administration. “Consumers are also advised not to consume any products past their expiry date,” the statement said.

According to the statement, symptoms of Cronobacter sakazakii, which are rare, can include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infections. According to the statement, Clostridium botulinum bacteria can develop illness six hours to two weeks after eating contaminated food and can be deadly. Symptoms may include impaired vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness.
