Nutanix Xi Framework Architecture Explained – HyperHCI.com

The Nutanix Xi framework architecture is completely based on a cloud-based DaaS solution that gives the flexibility to access your applications and virtual desktops from anywhere and anytime around the world because the framework Nutanix Xi has a unique architecture.

The Nutanix Xi framework architecture is an infrastructure-agnostic, desktop-as-a-service platform built for cloud deployment. With minimal setup, you can now use Frame to host your apps, desktop, and user data in your private cloud using the Nutanix AHV infrastructure.

Nutanix Xi Frame gives you the ability to run applications and virtual desktops on the main public clouds: AWS, Azure, and GCP. Frame can also use the on-premises Nutanix AHV infrastructure to run virtual and desktop applications.

Nutanix Xi Frame gives you the ability to choose the right infrastructure for a virtual workspace use case.

Nutanix Xi . Framework Architecture

The Nutanix Xi framework architecture is completely cloud-born – very simple, powerful, infrastructure-free and key-vendor-free. The Xi Framework Architecture provides seamless integration of Public and Private (On-Premise) cloud moving to a DaaS solution.

How Nutanix Xi Frame Works

The Nutanix Xi framework architecture is divided into three components:

  1. Public cloud (Aws, Google Cloud Platform, Azure cloud)
  2. Private cloud (On-premises infrastructure on the AHV Cluster)
  3. Nutanix Enterprise Cloud (Nutanix Cloud Frame Backplane)

Explore all three components and subsystems that help run the Nutanix Xi framework on public and private clouds/on-premises AHV clusters.

Public/private cloud components

  1. User
  2. Account frame
  3. Sandbox
  4. Production team
  5. IaaS API Gateway
  6. Prsim Central
  7. Cloud Connector ( CCA )
  8. CCA . Workload
  9. Streaming Gateway Appliance

Explore every subsystem/component of Public and Private cloud components/services below:

  • User – The user is an end user who is using the Nutanix Xi framework to connect the brutal workspace.
  • Account frame – User need to use and valid password to login Nutanix Xi framework to access virtual workspace – Virtual application or virtual desktop. Xi frame administrators have a privillege to create frame accounts for their users.
  • Sandbox – Sandbox is a special version on the Frame account, where the administrator of the account installs the application. The Sandbox act as your “golden master image”. This is where you set up and configure your applications and anything else specific to your environment (e.g. a Windows installation).
    • The sandbox is always set to automatically power off if not currently in use when the next hourly usage increase is about to arise. This prevents the organization from paying for server idle time.
    • Admin needs to install an app in Sandbox
    • All changes and configurations made on the Sandbox image will be visible online to all end users
    • Once the applications are integrated and the Sandbox is configured as desired, publish a copy of the Sandbox image to a set of production instances, which is what end users connect within the Frame to access their application. This Sandbox copying process is called publish.
  • Production team – The production team keeps track of the versions used to serve the end users. Users connect to production version when they go to their Launchpad and run an app. The administrator of the Frame account sets the parameters governing the size of the production version pool, which determines its ability to support a number of users.
  • IaaS API Gateway – Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) API Gateway providers provide the underlying virtual machines that power Xi Frame accounts. If your Xi Frame account infrastructure is managed by Frame (you don’t bring your own cloud account), you will use IaaS credits when a virtual machine (“virtual machine” or “instance”) is enabled/disabled.
  • Prsim Central – Nutanix Prism Central is developed natively to manage multiple Nutanix clusters through a single manageable window to centralize monitoring and task execution without any hassle to manage Nutanix Acropolis clusters . Nutanix Prism Central runs as a virtual machine VM that is installed after the Nutanix Cluster is up and running. Read more Nutanix Prism Central: Pro Vs . Beginner Features
  • Cloud Connector ( CCA ) – Cloud Connector is required for on-premises Xi framework deployment.
    • The Nutanix Frame Cloud Connector Appliance (CCA) is a required component responsible for connecting your local Nutanix AHV cluster to the Nutanix Frame service.
    • The Nutanix Frame Cloud Connector must be able to communicate with Nutanix Prism Central and must also be able to communicate with the Nutanix Xi Frame service over the Internet. Read more
  • CCA . Workload Workload CCA VM workload management connects users to sync with the Nutanix Frame cloud-hosted workload management service.
  • Nutanix Frame Streaming Gateway Appliance (SGA) is a secure reverse proxy that supports Frame Remoting Protocol (FRP).
    • If a user is accessing the Internet (in case of working from home or traveling) and wants to access virtual application or desktop hosted on Ntuanix framework then Nutanix SGA is considered as the proxy gateway for granting securely gives users – allow / Denny access to virtualized and/or desktop applications according to a policy configured by the administrator without requiring a VPN solution.
    • Nutanix recommends it to Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV) Frame infrastructure customers who need to install and configure SGA on their AHV cluster.

Now let’s talk about the main Nutanix Xi Frame cloud backplane that actually creates virtual desktops as a service.

Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Components

All critical services related to virtual workspaces are hosted on the Nutanix enterprise cloud operating as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) – handling the entire Nutanix Cloud Platform Board Frame.

The cloud-friendly Nutanix Frame backplane is a one-man army working behind the scenes to deliver virtual Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS).

Nutanix Frame cloud platform board components/services are:

  • Launchpad / Dashboard
  • Broker
  • Workload management
  • Cloud connection service
  • IaaS Orchestra
  • Identity management portal

Now, let’s explain each Nutanix Frame cloud backplane service.

  • Launchpad / Dashboard – Launchpad/Dashboard refers to the Xi Frame web console interface for end users, where users launch and manipulate applications. End users can be given access to multiple Launchpads depending on their organization’s needs.
    • For example, one Launchpad may contain applications for text editing while another Launchpad contains only specific billing applications.
    • Admins can configure multiple Launchpad skins to show what specific sets of applications are seen by end users and what features are visible to them.
    • If enabled, end users can switch between Launchpads by clicking the rectangular Launchpad list icon at the top of their screen.
  • Broker Broker is a cloud service hosted on a Nutanix multi-frame backplane – delivered as a service that handles the necessary access, security, and management functions in a desktop or application environment virtual.
    • It ensures that users are connected to appropriate virtual desktops and Virtual Applications running on cloud/private/on-premises infrastructure.
    • Broker interacts directly with virtual machines to – power on/off, create/delete, and restart workload VMs running end-user applications.
    • the broker is also responsible for secure role-based access control and gateway services to provide secure access to virtual and desktop applications through the launchpad, web interface or APIs. With VDI, the broker and its support services run in your data center (or co-location) and you are solely responsible.
    • The Nutanix team ensures that the broker and any related services are up to date.
  • Workload management – Workload Manager to track, manage, and deliver virtual applications and virtual desktop workloads.
  • Cloud connection service – Cloud Connector service helps to integrate your running on-premises AHV cluster/private cloud with the Nutanix chassis backplane to get the benefits of the Nutanix Xi framework.
    • cloud connection service connect to Prism Center through a cloud-connected device.
  • IaaS Orchestra IaaS orchestration is the end-to-end automation of the deployment of services in a cloud-based environment. Cloud orchestration tools leverage the full capabilities of IaaS service providers to achieve a fully automated streamlined deployment process model.
  • Identity management portal Identity management portals help organizations strengthen their distributed end-user application infrastructure and bring endpoint management to the data center, improving overall cybersecurity and reducing IT operating costs.

Nutanix Frame cloud cross-platform role is very important in DaaS, So it’s very important – Nutanix Frame cloud platform board services are always running without any issues to serve the workspace virtual for their customers anytime – anywhere.

Inference

Secure cloud-based Nutanix Xi Frame architecture – Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) – agnostic. Organizations can run on Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or on-premises. Nutanix The AHV cluster enables businesses and independent software vendors (ISVs) to deliver software-defined applications, desktops, and workspaces to users, organizations that can automatically capacity provisioning and de-licensing worldwide and across IaaS providers to adjust to fluctuations in end-user demand.
